The challenge
E-Fuels, also known as synthetic fuels or electrofuels, are synthetic fuels produced using renewable electricity. APPL will create e-methanol and ammonia by combining hydrogen produced through electrolysis of water using renewable electricity with captured carbon dioxide.
APPL faced a significant challenge in establishing a sustainable and efficient method for exporting renewable methanol and ammonia without relying on traditional jetty facilities. The challenge for APPL was not just about finding a way to export these products but doing so in a manner that reflected their values and contributed to their overall goal of becoming a leading supplier of clean E-fuels in Africa.
The solution
In response to APPL's challenge, ECOnnect introduced its jettyless terminal technology as a solution to facilitate the marine-based export of methanol and ammonia. ECOnnect Energy’s proprietary e-fuel export solution features a floating, low impact IQuay and subsea infrastructure to enable a safe and efficient export route, seamlessly connecting to e-Fuel carriers for futher export. This strategic collaboration between APPL and ECOnnect exemplifies a shared vision for driving forward transformative projects that prioritize both economic growth and environmental responsibility.
